Traces: A Love Letter 2020

About

Roxanne Simone, an African Caribbean British Metal-based visual artist who applies a multifaceted approach to her work. Simone's research into the dynamics of an intersectional diasporic body combines ethnographic fieldwork and an auto-ethnographic methodology. Simone challenges contemporary perceptions of race, queerness, gender, class, and lost histories through a non-linear exploration of time and futuristic possibilities. Within contemporary art, Simone's metalwork practice dives into reimagining physical and symbolic barriers, exploring objects, sculptures, image-making, colour, and materiality.

“Like an unleashing, arriving, an erupting. There is something about the technique (Hydroforming) which spoke to me- water is pushed through the material and expands it to the point where it bursts - that spoke to me metaphorically about experiences of Black Journeys in time and in history.”
